String Lights
String lights used to be reserved for festive periods only, this is not the case now though and string lights can be found in many homes all year round. String lights are great for creating ambient light and look beautiful, they come as mains powered, solar powered and battery powered. Battery operated solar lights offer the most flexible form as you can place them wherever you want and don’t have to rely on sunlight to power them.

Picture Lights
Although a very specialist form of lighting picture lights not only illuminate photos and artwork but they also create a wonderful ambient light by bouncing light of their subject. Picture lights generally come as mains powered devices but if you hunt around you may find the clip-on battery operated type.

Table Lamps
Table lamps come in a myriad of different styles and forms to match any decor. Most if not all make great sources of light for reading from and if you fit a dimmer can provide a good ambient light source to. Table lights are almost exclusively powered by the mains and so they can only be located near a power point.

Floor Standing Lamps
Floor standing lamps make even better reading lamps than table lamps as the height of the light source is generally above shoulder height, therefore when you’re reading the light can easily shine over your shoulder, or over the book you are reading. Floor standing lamps with dimmers definitely provide the most flexible form of lighting – dimmers can be bought that fit between the plug and socket – although generally speaking these will not work with energy efficient bulbs.

A mixture of these lighting sources should give you a very flexible lighting scheme where you can easily adjust it to your requirements.
