It seems to be most peoples’ assumption that eco friendly decor has to mean either poor quality or just plain ugly decorations for their home.

These days, eco friendly decorations may not only be good quality but are also aesthetically pleasing. In addition, they can, if chosen correctly, be even less expensive than the standard home decor that you may buy from any standard retailer.

So, if you have made the decision to go green when it comes to the decoration in your home, what is the best method to start? Perhaps the easiest change you can make is that, when replacing furniture or other items in your house (even if you’re not completely refurbishing), simply choose items that have been made from recycled materials. This is simple, and although it may seem obvious, if everybody did it the resources we could save across the world would be huge.

If you are refurbishing fully, eco friendly decor ideas can be simple. For example, when adding window furnishings, most peoples’ initial thoughts are of curtains or blinds. These are clearly well tested window dressings, and can work well. However, what can add an extremely homey touch (or depending on the material used, elegant touch) to a room is well picked window shutters. There are now products on the market that can work amazing well, and are made entirely from reclaimed wood (this can also have the advantage of giving them an antiqued and elegant look). On the other hand, if you would prefer a stylish alternative, you may like to look into window shutters created from bamboo. This can help create an eastern look, and a lot of these bamboo materials are sourced from entirely sustainable sources, but just ask your supplier for details to confirm.

If you have a new house or you are completely redesigning your existing one, you should put some thoughts into the flooring. Wooden flooring made entirely of reclaimed timber is an extremely environmentally sound way to create flooring; and if quality wood is used, it can make an attractive addition to your home. If you prefer carpets for your home decor, always ensure that they are made from natural fibers. It can sometimes be hard to find out how the fibers were produced, but for a truly environmentally friendly carpet installation, try to find out if the fibers were organically grown with only natural pesticides used.

In the same respect, whenever you are reupholstering any furniture, such as your sofa etc., always ensure that you use cloth made from natural fibers (and again, this should be organically grown without the use of unnatural pesticides – pesticides can poison the ground, leaking to the local ecosystem, and cause harm to local wildlife and plants).

When painting walls consider that standard paints contain toxic elements. Do not panic though: They are not in high enough levels to generally cause harm to humans (except for people who are susceptible through illness etc). However, to be truly environmentally friendly, try to always choose low voc paint, which has less harmful contents.

In general, when choosing eco friendly decor, it is the little things that help: Ensuring we use as little newly harvested wood as possible is important. Therefore, anything you can do to minimize this helps. This means that when you are refurbishing, don’t just think about how environmentally friendly your new furniture is, always either recycle your old furniture so that the wood can be reused or ensure it is donated to a charity or secondhand shop. This means that somebody else can use it rather than buying brand-new furniture, where new trees have to be destroyed, which just causes more environmental damage.

Whether you are starting from scratch or preparing to make a few improvements to your home, decorating does not need to be expensive. You can find stylish home decor on a budget if you keep a few tips in mind.

A good way to start is by thinking about the overall theme or atmosphere, which you wish to create. This will help you to avoid wasting money on products that you do not really need, or those that will not fit in with what you are trying to accomplish.

The next step is to consider the types of products you will need. The home decor you want may include furniture, paintings or other wall art, knickknacks, and other items. When you keep in mind that you want to create an overall effect for the entire room, it should not be difficult to decide on what you need.

Whether you want furniture or art, vintage decor can be much more economical than you may realize. The trick to stylish home decor on a budget is looking in the right places. You can begin by asking older people you know if you can look around their attics. You may be surprised to find little treasures from pine bedroom furniture to antiques that will enhance the appearance of your room. Even better, these treasures will be originals, rather than merely replicas.

Thrift stores, auctions, and online shops are also good resources for vintage decor. When you want to base your home on old-fashioned classics, all of these resources may turn up nice surprises. You may also find them at wonderfully affordable prices. You can find exactly what you are looking for, and also get nicely inspired with decorating ideas you may not have considered.

Whether you are starting a new home or have decided that you want a change in the home where you have lived for many years, you want the appearance of your home to be comfortable, welcoming to guests, and exciting. When you choose vintage decor, it will be like stepping into the past in your very own home. You can easily achieve this look without spending a lot of money. When you start by thinking about the effect you want, and the specific items you will need to achieve that particular effect, you have taken the first steps toward making your home look fabulous. Stylish home decor on a budget can be inexpensive, beautiful, and lots of fun.
