A chair in the bedroom is a very good place to start. Think about all of the hotels that you have ever stayed in and you are sure to remember that they all had chairs in them. Bedroom chairs are not like regular chairs though, in that more often than not they are more compact than a regular living room chair. Having a chair in your bedroom gives you an ideal place to sit and read and just creates a nice ambience.

The other piece of furniture that can create a nice atmosphere in any room is a room screen. You don’t even have to use the screen for any practical purpose, if you just have one propped up in the corner of the room it will transform the whole look and feel of the room completely.

The final item needed to create a sanctuary is not a piece of furniture; it is in fact more of an appliance. Lighting is the most important feature in creating the right ambience in any room, but particularly the bedroom. It also happens to be the most low cost and easy to install option. Having a couple of bedside lamps will give a wonderful soft lighting to any room. You may also want to look for a floor standing lamp which will give another source of light in the room. The key to good lighting design for the home is to have multiple sources of light so that it creates pools of light.

Beauty of Lighting

An outdoor space can be simple or extravagant, and the proper use of lighting will make either space more attractive to residents and guests.  Place specific task lighting exactly where it needs to be; if a barbecue light is needed, purchase or hardwire a barbecue lamp specifically for the grill.  Strong task lighting needs to be focused so others are not blinded by light spilling out.

Consider the design of table decor, patio furniture, cushions and commonly used patio dinnerware when purchasing a light for the outside dining space.  Coordinate colors, patterns and textures for maximum effect of patio lighting.  Lantern style lights or strings of lights hung from an umbrella, add a gentle and cheery light.  Use these as the main illumination and the low wattage bulbs will provide plenty of visibility while using very little energy.

Stronger Illumination

Outdoor sconces may serve as plenty of light for a small patio, or if the homeowner does not need to light up the backyard at night.  Old World lanterns and coach lights fit perfectly on the wall of traditional architecture, and contemporary homes will find minimalist chrome encased sconces with frosted glass.
Although different brands may vary, it is common for an outdoor wall lamp to use 60-watt bulbs.  At night, this wattage is very bright, so it is best to find a unit with frosted glass or another manner of diffusing the light.

Sconces can be used around the perimeter of the house, and are effective for use at exit and entryways into the home.  A combination of wall lighting, ground lighting and task lighting is the key to making the lighting scheme work for the individual home.  Consider using solar lamps for walkways and patio perimeters, and remember to buy low watt bulbs unless they are being used for specific tasks.

A single-tap transformer is much easier to install than a multi-tap transformer.  Unfortunately, because it doesn’t require much thinking to install, you run into problems with voltage drop when you’re running long lines or placing multiple lights.  They are best for homeowners that only want to have a few lights install, have a relatively simple lighting scheme, or can place the lights very close to where they have the transformer.

Multi-tap transformers, on the other hand, are a little bit harder to install, but you can run more complex garden light schemes out of them.  With a multi-tap transformer, you can run multiple lines out of the transformer and set the starting voltage level for each line so you can run your power cords longer or place more lights on each line.  Multi-tap transformers cost a little more and are harder to find, but they’re ideal for lighting systems where you can’t place your transformer close to your lights or you want more flexibility in your lighting scheme.

1. Modern or Traditional

You can get traditional lamp shades which are in the same form as those you find in period costume dramas of the Victorian or art deco period or you can get shades which would not look out of place in a movie about future space travel. You simply have to get the right type for your room.

2. Colored or Plain

You can get lamp shades made in clear glass or in muted colors. You can also get very brightly colored glass shades in one color to go with different interiors. Finally you can buy stained glass lamp shades such as Tiffany reproduction lamps which are made of many different colors.

3. Different Shapes

You can get many different shapes of glass shade such as small cylindrical shades, large round globe shapes and delicate fluted shades as well as the type of shade you get on a oil lamp with a round base leading to a small cylindrical top. Different shapes of shade will suit different bases or pendant lights. In general, if you can get a shape of shade in fabric you can generally get a similar shade made of glass.

4. Different Sizes

A small shade will suit a small lamp, and a large base a large shade, the exception being a lamp with a tall slim stem which suits a small shade. Many glass shades are quite small because the larger they are the more easily they are broken but you can get larger shades in glass – you just have to be very careful and they will probably be more expensive than similarly sized fabric shades.
