Plantation shutters pre-date glass windows and curtains by hundreds of years. The origins of these devised may date back to fifteenth century Greece, where the protection for window gaps in walls were rocks. These rocks were used for protection from elements outside the house which were undesirable, such as rain and snow.

As technology advanced, and need for practicable devices for protection through window gaps was desired, the rocks evolved into marble tracks which could be slid across the window gaps. Popularity spread, and as the shutters became much more popular in Europe, wood became the material of choice for their construction.

Shutters were constructed of large louvers, or slats, placed in a frame. These louvers or slats were rotated to either align, and allow light and air through the shutter, or placed vertical to prevent elements from entering the window gap. They were practical and common in upper scale homes, mansions and castles.

As technology further evolved, glass windows became a better solution for keeping out weather elements such as rain, wind and cold. With the use of glass to keep out elements, curtains became popular for keeping out light and obscuring view both in and out. Today, shutters are more for cosmetic purposes and have even evolved into the use of faux wood plantation shutters for economy as an example. Their use as decorative pieces and as an item to give a room or house a certain atmosphere or character has become their main function.

These shutters and their large, broad louvered shutters within wooden frames were very popular on plantations of the Southern United States. Use in the large residences of plantations in areas where cotton and sugar were grown gave the common and natural association as plantation shutters. Excessive use in southern areas has cemented the common and professional name of plantation shutters.

Having evolved over hundreds of years, the shutter has taken root, and will survive beyond its usefulness and utility. They now become desired for atmosphere and design. The plantation shutter will remain popular for a long time to come, if not in function, then in decoration and design.
