You will need some acrylic paint for wooden door knobs, for metal door knobs you will need a rustproof paint, some paint specially made to paint metal, and some cleaning materials.

You could also use a multi purpose paint that will work on any surface. In addition you will need some varnish, and paint brushes.

As much as it is possible you should take the door knob apart, if you cannot do that then you should protect adjacent surfaces with masking tape, this will not damage your door and will peel off easily.

Sand the door knob surface lightly with a very fine sandpaper. If your knob is made of metal, you should remove any trace of grease then paint a layer of rustproofing. Let it dry thoroughly before continuing.

When the rustproofing is completely dried, apply a coat of paint in any color you want, this will be the base of your work. You can if you want paint a second coat if you want your door knob to be a one color painted knob, or you can apply motifs or design on it at this time. You are only limited by your own imagination.

You can use stencils to help you come up with a nice design, if you have never done anything like this before. Let your imagination run free, little flowers, ethnic motifs, geometric shapes or even your child’s name, if the door knob is on his bedroom door. Try however to harmonize the colors with those of the door or the walls nearby, or you might end up with a clashing effect.

Finish your work by applying a coat of varnish that you must let dry completely before you apply a second coat. Let it dry at least 24 hours before re-installing the door knob in place.
