The first thing you will need to consider is your darling one’s character and how that will reflect in the decor. You need to find a common theme that you can repeat subtly around the room. Depending on the age of your rug rat, you may want to consult them for a colour. Also do they have a favourite toy or type of animal? This will be a great place to start.

Once you have decided on a colour scheme, you will want to source a few funky key items to really modernise the room. For a little girl’s room you could think about the use of a trendy pink chandelier, some votive candles, and a faux leopard fur throw for her bed. For a little boy, why not try some large decals for the walls – this way they can be updated as his tastes change as he grows older.

After you have chosen the key piece – you will need to be able to visualise it in the room. Take your pink chandelier light and draw it out in your room on paper, with your colour scheme swatches, to see if it will really ‘work.’ If it doesn’t then it’s back to the drawing board – often a key piece like the pink chandelier will function better with some more neutral wall tones and a couple of other bright accessories scattered around the room.

What you really don’t want to do is to try and crowd too many themes into too small of a space. If your son is into racing cars, and also likes dinosaurs and robots – the room is going to look way too busy. You need to pick one idea and stick with it and reiterate it throughout the space. One easy but really effective example is to find a bed shaped like a racing car, and to coordinate it with a rug made up of streets on the floor.

White or off white is always a good decision for wall colours, as walls can easily be dressed with decals or prints that will match the current personality of your child. How many times will they fall in love with a certain television show, only to totally change their minds 6 months down the track? The use of a neutral wall hue will enable you to keep up with the times for your kids without spending an absolute fortune redecorating your kids room decor every year.

The last thing to keep in mind is that children will be children – you need to keep it fun. Some easy yet creative ideas are ‘chalk paint walls’ where the children can write with chalk on a section of the wall, or magnetised sections of the wall, where they can put up their letter magnets and use their own imagination.
