You may be wondering what makes clay plaster such a green and healthy alternative.  It has to do with what the material is.  Basically, it is dirt – it’s clay.  And, as such, it doesn’t have any of those toxic properties like paints and other labor intensive materials like wall paper.  You can do this project yourself as well, which makes it another great feature for the home improvement market.  There are some big names in the clay plaster world, the most well known of which is American Clay.  They have a range of products and pigment-dyed clay plasters that you can apply directly over your existing walls.  Some preparation may be necessary depending upon your particular wall applications.

There are other ways to get a non-toxic change to your walls.  This can be achieved using low VOC paints.  Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are the agents in paint that are added to make it apply and dry quicker and may also be a part of the color itself.  Some paints are inherently more loaded with these chemicals than others.  While there is no conclusive evidence – in some minds – as to the health effects of these compounds, you might find that you or a family member have severe reactions to these types of compounds.  You would be much better off going with a safe paint that is known to have little if any VOCs in them.  This is why clay plaster makes such a great alternative to the traditionally painted wall.
