While there are some of these older rockers with cushions still intact, most of them
are plain wooden rocking chairs, often made by a family member.  The situation has not changed much today.  There are still a few upholstered glider rockers made for children, but most of the new ones available are also wooden.

These newer rocking chairs are hardly plain, though.  There are a few with a natural finish,
but most are painted in bright colors, often with themes such as cowboys, space ships, or
ballerinas. Only rarely do they come with cushions.  There are some cushions sold separately,  but they are better used with the natural finish rocking chairs, because their fabric colors are almost exclusively pastels, which don’t go well with the bright primaries of the painted finishes.

However, a good seamstress, either in an upholtery shop or within the child’s family, can
either recover an existing cushion in a bright fabric that coordinates with the chair’s
theme, or construct a new cushion from scratch.  A  rocking chair cushion for a child’s use
should be less firm than that for an adult so the child can sink into it.  It should also be thin enough that the child can back up to the chair and sit right down without having to climb
up into it.   The density of the cushion foam should be high enough that the rocking chair cushion will last as long as the child is able to fit in the rocker.

I guess it is just natural that the things that I never had, I want my son to experience and have them. Like in having his own room. I guess I’m just transferring my frustration and disappointment when it comes to that point to him but nevertheless I still want him to enjoy it as much as he can. It might sound small and trivial to some people but to me those things are  very important.

I wanted my son to do the decoration of his room. I let him choose everything that will be placed there. He is a great fan of Batman, that is why I was not surprised that he chose Batman bedding and a Gotham City wall decal to adorn his room. The first thing you will need to consider is your darling one’s character and how that will reflect in the decor. You need to find a common theme that you can repeat subtly around the room. Depending on the age of your rug rat, you may want to consult them for a colour. Also do they have a favourite toy or type of animal? This will be a great place to start.

Once you have decided on a colour scheme, you will want to source a few funky key items to really modernise the room. Today I came across what I think is a great idea – a clock as an educational but fun present. Boring? Not really, wait till you see this: imagine a clock, with all the inside parts visible through a clear glass/ plastic or cut out section. All the gear wheels and stepping mechanism (the mechanism that makes the hands move in small “steps”) can be seen in motion, as the clock runs. I can’t speak for anyone else, but even I’m intrigued. For something we see everywhere every day, I guess it just gets taken for granted how a clock works.

So why not give something that’s not just useful, but teaches at the same time. You can get lots of different styles, from colored plastic kids clocks (age 4 up) to much higher finish quality models, that are a true conversation piece in themselves. Even young teens would accept a skeleton style clock. This means a clock where most or all of the unnecessary parts including the case have been removed, to fully expose the mechanism leaving a very minimalist, modern look.

Another good idea would be a classroom school clock, where the mechanism can be seen. I remember all too well the boring white analog clock we had in school (I spent way too much time watching it), and remember the teacher taking the clock down when we were learning to tell the time. How cool would it be to have a skeleton or transparent case to look at instead?
