Patio Shade Sails and Canopies
There are a variety of shading structures and materials that can be used to provide that much needed shade for your patio. One of the more popular types of shading materials is a vinyl or vinyl coated polyester fabric that has a variety of properties that make it a great choice for outdoor use. First of all, it is strong enough to withstand the elements of rain, wind and dust. Secondly, many companies make a variety of these fabrics that also have UV protection and warranties. The most popular type of patio shades using these materials are the shade sails, like the ones you find in Australia. In fact, many of these are manufactured there.
The materials go by several names, Comtex® and Textilene® are just two examples. There are also brands like Coolaroo™ and Sunbrella™ that make fabrics and materials made for the outdoors. These are specifically able to handle the harsh conditions that your canopies or awnings will face.
The shade sails are especially attractive objects that you can use in a variety of backyard settings. They provide for a great overhead shade structure and are very durable because of how they are mounted. These sails are typically mounted at three points, either to poles or parts of your home’s structure. They are under tension, so that the wind does not catch them like a true sail and cause them to blow or flap. Traditional porch awnings or other canopies may have a tendency to be damaged in higher wind conditions.
There are some disadvantages of using this type of structure as well. One such problem is that they are not as adjustable as a manual or motorized awning. The latter types can be opened or closed as you need them and can be out of site when not necessary allowing the sun to fully penetrate your patio or deck space. Since you may desire this type of flexible shading or maybe your particular space or applications don’t warrant a shade sail, then the typical patio shade will be your best bet.
