How To Buy Oak Bedroom Furniture On A Tight Budget

If you do not have a high income, you usually cannot afford to buy oak bedroom furniture. But if you have ever laid eyes on an oak bed or wardrobe, then you know how beautiful the oak wood is. The rich grains and knottings in the quartersawn oak boards used to make high quality oak furniture cannot be matched by the fiberboard used to make cheap modern furniture. And furniture made of oak has a nice bonus – oak is a hardwood that can last almost forever. As long as you do not abuse it, you will never have to replace solid oak wood furniture for as long as you live. In fact, you can even pass it on to your heirs.
Fortunately, where there is a will, there is a way. For those with the determination but a tight budget, we will show four strategies to find discounted oak bedroom furniture. The first is to look for a furniture sale. The best is a sale of showroom display sets. This is when the furniture store sells off its older display furniture to free up the space and show new furniture designs. This is when you can get the biggest discount. Another good choice is during warehouse sales, when the furniture maker or store needs to clear space of older bedroom furniture designs to make way for new stock. End-of-season sales held by furniture stores are also good times to look for discounts. They are bringing in new consignments of furniture and need to clear their old stock.
A second strategy is to shop online. You probably already know about online retailers like Targets. But did you know that many larger furniture makers (especially those with strong brands like Sauder, Meruno, or Kathy Ireland) also have their own online catalogs and websites where you can directly order furniture? Even smaller furniture manufacturers can sell their own furniture online using Amazon.com’s webstore system. Amazon.com does not just sell books today, they also rent out their internet stores to other product manufacturers. However, note that the colors of the photos shown in the online stores can be misleading, the rich reddish brown you see in the photo may actually be more red than brown or more brown than red. The difference between photo and reality could be due to many reasons, with some of the most common being your computer’s settings, the settings of the retailer’s computer, or even the transfer of the photo from camera to computer.
Strategy number three is to buy unfinished furniture made of oak. These oak bedroom furniture sets are not painted, waxed or varnished. They may not even be polished smooth. Some of these furniture packages are specially made for DIY enthusiasts. But your best choice is to call up the factories which make oak furniture and ask if they have anything that failed quality control but is still of reasonably good condition. Most will not entertain your questions or requests, but persistent effort should yield results.
The fourth strategy is to buy secondhand oak beds and wardrobes. The condition of this type of furniture varies – nicks and scuffs, gashes, loose joints, broken pieces, etc. The best are those which seem bad but are actually easy for you to repair. These are the types where you can really bargain the price down, e.g. by obviously shaking the bed with legs that have become loose. Where can you find such used furniture? The usual suspect are in neighborhood garage sales, on Craigslist, and on eBay.
Real oak wood furniture is not cheap. But if you really want it, use the strategies above to find something that you like. If you do not have a big budget, you just have to substitute effort and patience for the missing cash.
