Gathering Around a Classic Farmhouse Table

oak finish farmhouse tableThe thought of a family, all together, sitting around the farmhouse table is one that evokes feelings of warmth and comfort. Bowls of food, lovingly made and served cover the table surface. Family members gather to share the joys and struggles of their day. Eating food together, as well as the accompanying conversation, is becoming a lost tradition in our fast paced society and the impact of that in our relationships is significant. Adding a gathering place like a farmhouse table and chairs to your home is a wise and wonderful investment. The memories made there will last a lifetime.

Antique farmhouse tables and chairs are ones with character and history. Growing out of the furniture styles found in France and Italy in the depths of their rural regions, they are typically long and capable of seating several people. Often made of pine or oak and having a distressed or well-loved appearance, they portray that they have seen hundreds of meals on them. Designed to evoke the feeling of “Come, gather here…” they welcome their families with open arms.

Most major furniture companies market these tables today. Popular retailers, such as Crate and Barrel, build their whole brand around pieces that portray the same country style feeling. They sell well and are in high demand. They can be purchased at a number of price points, from quite inexpensive to many thousands of dollars for custom or specially made pieces. Often available with plank tops, they are often available in a variety of finishes. Some stores offer your choice of tops and bases, giving you the opportunity to design the piece that is perfect for you and your home.

Many families purchase farmhouse table styles in the hopes that family dinner time will become a new reality for them. A classic family dining table, with its history and character, can become a place where food, family and conversation all come together.
