Bean Bags in 2010
A bean bag sofa is a sealed cloth or bag that is filled up with different materials in order to be used as furniture like chairs. This concept of a bean bag has been a popular item in the late 1960s and early 1970s.Current fashion introduces the comeback of bean bags and is now made with great style.
Older concepts of bean bag furniture dated back before the 60s where they are used as primary foundation for toys and dolls. It is a made of cloth filled with beans, rice, corns and other organic materials. This is a Go-green movement of the past that could be applied today to save the environment. The problem with this is that it may attract pest and other vectors of diseases since moisture may trap in and decay the organic fillings (unless formulas could be invented to preserve and prolong the quality of the organic filling).
Current trend in bean bag filling is with the use of PVC pellets or expanded polystyrene. It is a color less and rigid plastic that is also used as means to produce “peanuts” for packaging, disposable coffee cups, and foam picnic coolers. This is used widely as filler because it shifts and moves smoothly giving the comfort a person look for. Recycled polystyrene are also available. They are rejects from factories that were remolded but still feels like the having the first class comfort.
Another type of filler is the shredded foam. It is made from polyurethane: a resilient, flexible and durable material that can take the place of metal, cotton, rubber and woods. It can be as hard as fiberglass, bouncy ass rubber, sticky as glue and squishy as a cotton pad. It was discovered in the 40s and is now a primary element used for the creation of baby toys to airplane wings. This has been the main filler for couches and chairs. Resilient feature of this element is seen upon standing up. The seated beanbag with a deform look will go back to its original form (unseated feature) automatically and thus, lesser filler damage and refills.
Now, there are fillers in the market that combines polystyrene and polyurethane giving you double offer for comfort. It’s up for you to decide what fillers you want for your bean bag. Always put this into consideration, all fillers have its positive and negative benefits. It is best to make the most of the positive.
