velvet curtainsVelvet Curtains are not normally used alone. They are perfect for keeping sunlight, dust and pollutants from the room. However, although we generally want to prevent harmful microorganisms and particles from the entering the room all the time, there are times of the day when we would like sunlight to bathe the room. Then we should be using sheer curtains besides velvet ones for our windows.

Velvet curtains find their most practical use as blackout curtains. They are drawn at night to keep out the cold air and stay drawn until well into the next day in order to allow people to extend their sleep. Generally there would be an additional set of translucent curtains closer to the window. These curtains are drawn during the daytime for providing protection against the pollutants in the air while allowing access to the sunlight. Sometimes a decorative length of velvet is shirred above the thin curtain. This is called the valance curtain.

To complete the functionality that your velvet curtains offers, you should avail yourself of a thinner curtain to use during the daytime. It is this curtain which should be permanently drawn. The curtains should be opened and tied up along the side of the window elegantly. Optionally, to give your window decor more sophistication, you could have a short and narrow strip of shirred velvet installed above the window itself.

With that arrangement, you can seal off the room completely by drawing the velvet curtains or partially, as when you want the sunlight to come in,  by opening the velvet drapes and keeping the sheer ones drawn.

This arrangement will also reduce the dirt that stands to get caught in your velvet drapes since most of the dirt and pollen will have been caught by the sheer curtains. Consequently, you will not have to clean it too often and your curtains should last much longer because of that.

Remember that sunlight bleaches colored fabrics. With this in mind, you should select a light colored fabric for your outer sheer curtain even if it fades in the sunlight, the change will not be so noticeable. At any rate, you should have them there in order to prevent your inner velvet curtains from fading in a short time.

Having assembled your window curtains in the correct way, you can anticipate minimizing the problems that people usually encounter in using velvet drapes.
