Choosing The Right Size For Your Floor Rugs
If you ever visit a carpet store and look at all the floor rugs available you cannot but wonder at the sheer number of selections then it might occur to you that even choosing a size is not that easy to do. Here are a few tips to help you going home with the right rug.
For a dining room: you must select a rug that is large enough that when seated at the table all four legs of the chairs still rest on the rug. This means that the rug must exceed the table on all sides by at least 20 inches.
For example for a table measuring 42″ x 64″ your rug would have to be a minimum of 82” x 104”, you would then buy a 6’ x 9’ standard size rug. For great comfort, and so that people can back up their chair and still be on the rug you could go one size larger and use a 7’ x 10’.
For the shape of your floor rugs, you can opt for rectangular, round or square depending on the room and the table. A round rug always looks better under a round table. You must also make sure that your guests will still be on the rug once sitting at the table.
For a living room: don’t use a rug that barely extends past the edges of your coffee table. First it is not that attractive and it really does not add any esthetic interest to the rooms decor.
The rug can set a space apart and create a link between a sofa and chairs. If you want to place it under the coffee table, choose one that is large enough so that people can move around the table freely and still be on the rug. Remember that it is better not to have any rug than to have one that is too small, and that will make the room look smaller.
An edged rug will look smaller than a clean edge. Avoid beautiful contemporary designs if you plan to place the rug under furniture where nobody will see them.
