master bedroom furnitureThere are three main types of furniture in the market today – flat-pack, custom/bespoke and fitted bedroom furniture. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Simplistically speaking, however, fitted furniture falls somewhere in between flat-pack and custom furniture.

Like custom furniture, fitted furniture makes optimal use of space in the bedroom. Both types of furniture are expensive and usually have to be bought as a package. Once installed, both are difficult or impossible to dismantle and move around.

Like flat-pack furniture, fitted furniture is made in the factory. That means you can buy either type of furniture as is, right from the showroom. What you see is what you get, unlike custom furniture where you have to hope that the furniture craftsman you hired does a good job. Both are normally made from medium density fiberboard (MDF).

Due to the cost, most people would only buy fitted master bedroom furniture. The guest rooms would normally use cheaper flat-pack furniture.

Luxury fitted bedroom furniture comes in many styles, from the simple (e.g. the rustic, country or Mission styles) to the sophisticated and fantastic (e.g. the Victorian and Queen Anne styles). Wardrobe doors may be completely mirrored, and stretch from wall to wall and floor to ceiling. The bed would not use a box-spring, but a bed-base installed with drawers and storage compartments.

There are three main types of wardrobes in fitted bedroom furniture – full carcase, sliding door and frame construction. The first, full carcase, is the most common. It can only be installed against a completely flat wall with squared corners. The second, the sliding door built-in wardrobe, is normally used for cramped bedrooms. With a sliding door, you do not need the clearance space needed for a normal hinged door and can place a large king-sized bed or additional pieces of furniture. It is the cheapest and easiest type for fitted wardrobe to install. The last type, the frame construction built-in wardrobe, is the most flexible of the three designs. It can be built even against a wall with obstructions (like a chimney) or in a converted attic or basement bedroom. It is also the most expensive.

Flat-pack bedroom furniture, custom bedroom furniture and fitted bedroom furniture all have their own advantages and disadvantages. However, fitted master bedroom furniture is best used in a house or apartment that you own, because it is usually difficult to move around. It is best installed when you need to make the best use of space, for example in the cramped bedrooms common to newer houses and apartments.
