What Is A Pergola?
There are many ways to make your backyard and patio areas more attractive aesthetically, but there are also ways to make them more functional as well. This is definitely the case with certain types of patio covers. One of those that we’ll take some more time to discuss here is the pergola style of patio shade structure. It does a lot more than provide shade, but we’ll get to that in a minute. One of the great things about a pergola is that it has a very simple design. It can be built by a fairly proficient DIY homeowner as well, making them a very popular choice.
In most cases, wood is the preferred material of choice when it comes to building a pergola. This is because wood lends itself to the handsome and rustic feel that many homeowners are looking for in their patio space. Some people enjoy a nice outdoor fire in the evening or have a little more lounging time in mind beneath their shaded and vine covered structure. There are any number of ways that a pergola might provide you with more time to do the things you enjoy on your patio. Entertaining friends and family is another great feature of having a patio decor that is welcoming and inviting.
Because the pergola is such a simple structure, architecturally speaking, it can be ‘dressed up or down’ to create whatever type of ambiance you are seeking to create. But, we haven’t even discussed what the pergola is yet. Even with that, you probably have a sense of what your patio could look like. Isn’t that amazing! The thing is, you probably do know what it is, maybe just not by that name.
Occasionally, people will use the term arbor or trellis to describe this type of structure. And, also you might hear the term gazebo. But, a gazebo is really more of a different type of entity, with a hexagonal shape, usually some built-in benches and a more formal pitched roof. The trellis and arbor could be accurate descriptions or synonyms for a pergola, they just often differ in size. A trellis is sometimes used to describe a smaller structure. An arbor is often used to describe a structure found in or near a garden as in garden arbor. What ever term you should decide to use or search for in your quest for the perfect patio place, examine what a pergola might do for your backyard space.
