Colorful, fragrant and stunning hanging flower baskets are often used as decorative touches on the exterior of homes. Many homeowners choose to create these beautiful hanging baskets on their own, while others buy them in hanging containers sold at garden supply, builder and home supply and some big box stores. Prices on hanging flower baskets range from $10 to well over $50 depending on the plants used, the container and the size of both the container and the plants.

For people that live in very warm regions during which even the cooler summer days reach 95 degrees in the shade, it can be difficult to keep these hanging flower baskets alive and blooming for any length of time. The reason for this difficulty is that hanging baskets of flowers are more exposed to air and wind and therefore the roots tend to dry out faster than those plants that are in the ground.

To keep the hanging flower baskets looking their best in hot weather areas, there are various techniques that can help to keep the soil wetter such as adding water absorbing gels to soil and adding one-third topsoil to the potting soil. Also, of course, in hotter regions, more frequent watering is necessary. This can be once a day or even twice per day in extremely hot conditions.

Plants that can stand such weather conditions as full sun and extremely dry and hot temperatures. Some hot climate options that tend to do well are Lantana, Bougainvillea, Flowering Purslane, Zinnia Angustifolia, Portulaca and Periwinkle. Remember to follow instructions for watering, pesticide applications and to keep in mind that it may be necessary to water hanging flower baskets and hanging plants more often than is recommended for ground potted plants or plants in the ground.

Hanging flower baskets make terrific gifts for friends, family and coworkers and are also thoughtful hostess gifts that will last through the season. They’re fabulous accents for front porches, back patios and look terrific when hung in groupings. They can be hung from hooks mounted in ceilings or from metal stakes with hooks that are pressed deeply into the ground. Another great hanging place is from tree limbs on the front lawn and in the backyard as well.
