When decorating your new child’s room there are several choices to make. One of the most important choices is where is the new baby going to sleep? There are several options one can choose from here; a Moses basket, a baby cot, and a convertible crib. A Moses basket only last for a short time while the child is small and therefore is a rather uneconomical choice for new parents. This leaves us with a baby cot and a convertible crib.
A baby cot is a perfect starter for a young child. It is an economical choice for the parents and comes in a variety of options. They are typically made of wood, however they can be metal frame or even plastic frame as well. The safest, and usually the best looking, option is the wood frame. These come in a variety of stains, styles, and paints to match the theme is any room. Baby cots usually have a fold down or sliding gate for easy access to the baby when caring for it. However when the baby outgrows the baby cot, it is then relegated to storage.
A convertible crib on the other hand is a far more versatile piece of furniture. A convertible crib starts off as a piece of furniture very similar to a baby cot. However it is not the only form a convertible crib can take. Once the baby has graduated to a single bed, convertible cribs can graduate with it. Most convertible cribs can convert from a crib, to a day bed, or single or even a double bed whenever necessary. This added luxury does have a draw back though. That drawback is the cost of the crib. A convertible crib is more expensive than a baby cot is and some of the convertible cribs do not come with the conversion kits so one has to be careful when purchasing a convertible crib to make sure that it has all the pieces or to factor in the additional cost of conversion kits. There is also no fold down or sliding gate on a convertible crib. This can either be seen as a negative or a positive as a folding gate can become a health hazard as the child grows. However the bottom of the crib is usually adjustable to whatever height that the parents need to care for their baby.
Overall, parents need to decide first what they can spend on a crib and what purpose that they are using it for. If they need something that can grow with the child and can afford it then it is a good choice. If the child has a hand me down bed he can sleep on or if the parents cannot afford the convertible crib, then the baby cot is the best choice to purchase.
