Gliders versus Rockers

Gliders are a type of rocker that consist of a base attached by four bar linkages to the seat thus creating a swing motion similar to the motion of a traditional rocker. One theory is that people wanted an alternative to the traditional ski rocking chair because the skis damaged carpets.

Today the consumer can buy a traditional rocker, a glider, a recliner or a combination of the former that also swivels 360 degrees. These combination “comfort” chairs are found in many styles and prices. You can get a leatherette rocking swivel glider with or without an ottoman. If you are handy and enjoy do-it-yourself projects, a kit can be purchased that comes complete with all of the pieces and tools necessary to assemble a glider/rocker and ottoman perfect for the nursery. The glider can be purchased without the ottoman if that is your preference. Some of the gliders come with matching glider ottomans that move back and forth with the motion of the glider thus, the body and feet move easily together. They come in a variety of styles, wood types and upholstery, although, the more traditional indoor rocking chair cushions seem to be more popular in gliders. There are some more streamlined contemporary looking gliders and ottomans with a round solid base. The contemporary styles seem to be upholstered in leather or leatherette materials.

Another option in a glider is wicker or “wicker-look”. This “wicker” chair is designed for outdoor use rather than indoor furniture. However this wicker-look glider may be used any where there may be a demand for rinsing off from time to time. Children can be allowed to use this chair without fear of the occasional accidental spill. The wicker-look gliders do not offer the style that other types of gliders offer but they are great for a child’s room or den.

gliderThe base of a glider does not or should not come up off the floor so fingers and toes of children and paws and tails of pets are less in harm’s way. However, parents should always be vigilant of small children and pets. As the parent of a toddler can tell you, they move at what at times seems like the speed of sound and they have an unending curiosity about how things work.

The prices of gliders start at approximately $200 and go up from there. They all promise to be well constructed and last for years. No doubt some are well constructed and will last for many years. It is assumed that the more expensive the piece, the better the quality. It is always wise to inspect your glider carefully, checking the frame and seat cushions. Make sure that the pieces are glued or blotted securely and the seat and back have adequate support.
