Types of Glass Lamp Shades
There are several types of glass lamp shades which you may come across in looking to replace a shade and until you start looking you might not realize what a diversity of types there are.
1. Modern or Traditional
You can get traditional lamp shades which are in the same form as those you find in period costume dramas of the Victorian or art deco period or you can get shades which would not look out of place in a movie about future space travel. You simply have to get the right type for your room.
2. Colored or Plain
You can get lamp shades made in clear glass or in muted colors. You can also get very brightly colored glass shades in one color to go with different interiors. Finally you can buy stained glass lamp shades such as Tiffany reproduction lamps which are made of many different colors.
3. Different Shapes
You can get many different shapes of glass shade such as small cylindrical shades, large round globe shapes and delicate fluted shades as well as the type of shade you get on a oil lamp with a round base leading to a small cylindrical top. Different shapes of shade will suit different bases or pendant lights. In general, if you can get a shape of shade in fabric you can generally get a similar shade made of glass.
4. Different Sizes
A small shade will suit a small lamp, and a large base a large shade, the exception being a lamp with a tall slim stem which suits a small shade. Many glass shades are quite small because the larger they are the more easily they are broken but you can get larger shades in glass – you just have to be very careful and they will probably be more expensive than similarly sized fabric shades.
