Pet Friendly Decor Ideas

Pets can add a wonderfully, warm dimension to your life. While it is a challenge living with an indoor pet and keeping your home decor looking chic and well decorated, it is possible by following a few simple pet friendly decor ideas.

Match the color of your furniture to the color of your pet’s fur. Have you ever picked up a white cat to pet when wearing a black jacket? Well, the same can happen with your furniture also. In order not to have animal fur showing up all over your furniture, choose furniture and pillows that are a similar color to your pet. Plain colored furniture shows fur much more than patterned material does.

If you have a cat, I would not suggest leather furniture as cats love to scratch on leather. It can be a good resilient choice, however, if you have a pet dog. Avoid delicate or hard to wash fabrics-no silk or velvet curtains or bed-covers, or velvet couches. As much as possible, buy furniture with removable cushion covers. That way they can be easily washed.

Carpet is not really suitable for homes with pets, unless you buy the very short type or use carpet squares that can be replaced should they become soiled. Wood floors are great for pets, providing the floors have a hard, scratch resistant finish. Alternatively, tiled floors are also great. To avoid your floor looking too cold and stark try buying washable throw rugs to place around your living areas. Remember though; choose rugs that blend in with your pet’s coloring.

Just as you would child-proof a room if you had a baby, you should also pet-proof your rooms. Cats love to jump, so it may not be wise to have your delicate glass and ceramic ornaments on open display. Dogs can be rather clumsy and playful at times, so make sure your small tables are sturdy and cannot be easily bumped or pushed over.

Wee Westie´s Nuclear BallThere are plenty of stylish pet decor items that will actually look good in your home. Throw away old, beaten up dog bowls and buy something that looks nice and that is color coordinated with your home. Your dog does not have to eat out of a yellow or red bowl! A relatively new innovation when it comes to cat litter boxes is the introduction of concealed litter boxes. Cats love them, as it allows them a little privacy while they do their business! There are also some great designer dog and cat beds available, that really will add to your overall decor rather than detracting from it.

When it comes to decorating with pets think washable, durable and practical. Great decor does not have to go out the door when you bring your pets home!
