Decor is a word used to describe the decorations with which people adorn their homes and places of business. It refers to the style and to the layout of ones interior furnishings. There are many different styles of decor to reflect the varied tastes of any individual.

Traditional decor is a classic style that fills the home with classic lines and typically, with neutral colors. Traditional style decor incorporates a lot of warm wood and uses vintage and antique pieces throughout for a gracious, comfortable, old-fashioned ambiance. Contemporary style decor allows a person the choice of going with hip, retro, or modern styles of decorating. This is a popular style among today’s younger generations. Cottage style goes for a warm look with personal touches throughout. Country style creates a cozy and casual, lived in look with items that reflect a rural lifestyle. Country French, on the other hand, is a romantic style with a lot of dramatic flair.

For those who prefer a traditional style decor for their home or office, there are several tips to help achieve that particular look. A traditional looking home might have a formal dining room, for instance, with a large wooden table and chairs, linen cloth and a pretty centerpiece on a rich colored table runner. Items that may be found in a traditional home are a china closet filled with delicate teacups and pretty print plates. Antique chairs may be used, refurnished to make them smart once again. A large antique mirror would look great in the living area of a traditional home, hanging low on the wall to reflect the rest of the decor. An antique daybed and a chandelier enhance the look of a sitting room. Wainscoting adds a nice touch with wallpaper in a delicate print above it and natural wood panels below. A table in the hallway might be decorated with pretty depression era pottery filled with dried flowers. A collection of pottery in different shapes makes for attractive tabletop decor, as well. The traditional look often includes at least one shelf if not a bookcase or two filled with classic books and sometimes accented with antique pieces of interest. Bedroom walls are traditionally painted in one color, often a soft shade, but sometimes sport a deep, rich tone. A roll top desk or a secretary fit well into the traditional living room.

Bedroom DecorContemporary styles bring a home up to date with modern looks that keep current with the times. Sometimes modern looks can be minimalistic and somewhat cold, but that is not necessarily the case. Contemporary decor can be comfortable without being cluttered. This look is based on clean lines and simplicity, texture and subtle sophisticated pieces of furniture. Black and white, as well as neutral colors is the basis of contemporary decor, but they are often given a bold punch of color with vivid highlights here and there. Often the walls are painted neutral and accessories are bright, or the walls are bright and bold, and furnishings are kept neutral for a nice contrast. Bold color blocks and stripes are popular in contemporary decor. Less is always more, and often a room is enhanced with out splashy, expensive piece rather than a collection of smaller items. Smooth, clean geometric shapes make up contemporary style furniture. A splashy pillow in a bold white and red pattern may offset a black sofa. Kitchens usually have sharp, clean lines or curves, and many times the appliances are stainless steel or black.

Country style decor is inspired by the rural lifestyle. Gingham and plaid is still used as table covering and curtains. This style can be personalized a great deal. Kitchens are warm and homey and often display a theme, such as sunflowers, apples, chickens or cows. The old west might be brought to life in a country style home, with leather and wood abounding in a living room. One might even find a saddle rack holding the owner’s nicest silver studded show saddle. Vintage pieces are used creatively in country style home decor. For instance, a set of cute vintage towels may be used as the curtains in the bathroom. Imagination runs rampant to create an eclectic look that is cozy and personal to honor the simple and colorful country life.

Cottage style is similar to country style in many ways, although themes might be more nautical than rural. Wood tones are used liberally and antique pieces add texture and charm. Floral patterns abound on walls and bedding, curtains and accent pieces. Shutters are a must on the windows. Interior shutters as Dining Room Decorwell as exterior ones give that special cottage feel. While pretty, soft colors are used white is also found throughout the decor. Cottage style blends the old with the new to create a homey feel.

No matter what a person’s tastes are, there are a multitude of choices when it comes to decor for the home or business. Decor can be as eco-friendly and natural as one desires to make it. Every room in the home can benefit from choosing decor to highlight and enhance the features of the room, from the bathroom to the kitchen, dining room to den. Anyone wishing to decorate in a particular decor should do a little research on what that style entails and then have a great time shopping for the pieces that will bring that style to life in their own environment.
